Signs of aging can easily present themselves through our skin– but not just the skin on our faces. In fact, the skin of the neck, which is often overlooked when it comes to skincare, is more prone to wrinkles and signs of aging.
Contributing Factors
- Tech neck: constantly looking downwards towards our devices creates wrinkles over time
- Thin, delicate skin: the skin of the neck is much more delicate than the skin on the face and the rest of our bodies. This makes it easier for it to sag and droop, and wrinkles are formed in a shorter amount of time.
- Collagen Levels: Neck skin naturally produces less collagen, and loses flexibility and strength as we age.
- Fragrance Use & Sun Damage: due to the common placement of fragrances on the neck area, photodynamic agents in fragrances can make the skin more susceptible to sun damage. Exposure to harmful UV rays without constant SPF can lead to signs of aging.
To combat the unfortunate reality of more prominent signs of aging on the neck, there are a few preventative and reactive measures one can take.
Preventative Measures
The #1 preventable cause of neck-aging is sunlight exposure which causes collagen loss. By staying away from direct sunlight and using a high SPF sunscreen, collagen levels can be maintained. In turn, this reduces fine lines and wrinkles on the neck. Additionally, being aware of our posture, especially when reading, using our smartphones, and looking at computer screens. Position yourself and the item you are holding to be at eye level. Over time, this will significantly reduce tech-neck (and back pain, at that)!
Reactive Measures/ Treatments
Good practice when it comes to a skincare routine is to always extend the products we are using beyond the skin of our faces, and onto our necks! Using the products we typically use on our face (ie; serums, moisturizers, cleansers, etc) on our neck can work to restore hydration and elasticity to the skin. There are also neck-specific topical products that are made for the delicate skin of the neck rather than the face, if you are looking for more targeted treatment. Non-invasive, pain-free treatments such as Voluderm RF Microneedling uses radiofrequency-first technology and microneedling to rejuvenate the skin and reduce wrinkle formations. The ultra-thin needles create micro-wounds; penetrating the deep dermal layer smoothly. In combination with thermal energy, fibroblasts increase the production of hyaluronic acid, collagen, and elastin.
By having both preventative and reactive measures in place, you’ll be throwing away the scarf and saying goodbye to your aging neck!
