Background
Benign epidermal pigmented lesions, including solar lentigines, ephelides, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, arise from excessive accumulation of melanin within the epidermis or dysregulated melanocyte activity following ultraviolet exposure, inflammation, or intrinsic aging. Although these lesions are generally benign, they represent one of the most common aesthetic concerns encountered in clinical practice. The objective of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy is not to mechanically remove these lesions, but rather to selectively target excess melanin while preserving the surrounding healthy tissue, allowing the body’s natural wound dealing mechanisms to eliminate damaged pigment and gradually restore a more homogeneous skin tone.
